There are several types of aggregates to choose from to
hand seed. The aggregates can vary in shape, size, color and
texture so you can tailor the stones to whatever look you
desire. With out-of-truck exposed aggregates, the look is less
controlled because there is little selection process and is
cheaper than the hand seeded process.
Hand seeded aggregate
concrete offers a large selection of aggregate or rocks. To begin
the customer selects what type of rock or aggregate they want. The
rocks are washed so there is no dust or residue on them. The
concrete first is poured and leveled. If color is desired, the
integral coloring system is used. The concrete cures until almost
completely hard when the cleaned, selected aggregates are thrown
over the top of the concrete. A float is swept over the rock to
set them in the concrete. While using the float the creamy layer
that is traditionally produced while leveling concrete covers the
hand-seeded aggregates. At this point the concrete has completely
covered the entire aggregates. A retardant is sprayed on top of
the concrete to keep that creamy layer of concrete soft. The
concrete is left to cure overnight. Returning the next day, the
top layer of concrete is washed off and the hand-seeded aggregates
are revealed. Some rock may need a little extra scrubbing to
remove the concrete from the rocks.
Out of truck aggregate is a bit different from
hand-seeded aggregate. With hand seeded you can choose from a
variety of rocks to be embedded into the concrete; but with
out-of-truck aggregate you get the aggregates that come naturally
in the concrete. The rocks are usually smaller and do not vary in
color as much as hand seeded does.
The concrete is poured and leveled, using integral color system if
color is desired. Once the concrete is troweled smooth, retardant
is sprayed on the top of the concrete to keep the top layer from
hardening and is left to sit overnight. The crew returns the
following day to wash off the top layer to reveal the natural
aggregates in the concrete.

Curing Period: We recommend that
the concrete sit for a few days before any foot traffic be
applied. We suggest that no vehicles or heavy items be placed
on the concrete for at least 28 days, after which the concrete
will be fully cured. If 28 days is not feasible to stay off
the concrete, the psi (the density of concrete) can be
increased so that the concrete will cure faster and will be
able to withstand the weight of a heavy item such as a vehicle
in less time. It is recommended that the aggregate be sealed.
*With the advent of the states regulations relating to
groundwater recharge and storm water runoff, PCI is advancing
several different applications of pervious concrete especially
designed for the application. From tree wells to parking
lots, municipalities are requesting pervious concrete to
protect the waters of the nation. Pervious concrete can
withstand large deluges of water, with permeability factors of
4 inches per hour with a proper substrate installation.
